Command Frame Introduces a Free Command Interface to Adobe After Effects, Reaching 3,000 Downloads Since Launch
19 August 2026 - Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom
Motion graphics designer Scott Black releases a floating search-and-command interface for After Effects, expanding far beyond effect and preset search with property values and shortcut-driven multi-step commands.
I'm Scott Black, an independent After Effects motion designer and plugin developer, and Command Frame, my free command interface for Adobe After Effects, has now surpassed 3,000 downloads since its launch on the 11th of May 2026.
Command Frame is available now as a free download via aescripts + aeplugins at aescripts.com/command-frame.
What Command Frame Does
Command Frame presents a floating search bar that collates over 1,300 actions. Beyond effects and presets, Command Frame can jump directly to layers and compositions, apply property values such as "scale *0.5" or "opacity 50", surface installed scripts and panels, and import toolbars and their buttons as searchable actions.
Command Frame diverges from existing launchers in its support for chained, multi-step commands. Actions can be combined with "&" and the resulting chain saved, named, and assigned a custom shortcut that can fire without opening the interface. In practice, this lets users create and bind macros that execute complex operations with a single keystroke.
Context and Comparison
Adobe introduced Quick Apply, a floating effect and preset launcher, to After Effects in a recent release, bringing functionality similar to Video Copilot's FX Console. Command Frame starts from the same premise but goes much further, adding true composition and layer search, parameter support, workspace actions, plugin action integration, and a persistent execution history.
Since launch, I have released 14 updates, adding searchable panels, recognised actions for scripts such as EaseCopy, sound effects for actions, in-app "Show Me" tutorials, script watch folders, on-screen action feedback, settings backup, and deep UI customisation.
Ecosystem Integration
Command Frame includes a first-class API, featuring an initial integration with three of my other plugins — Control Groups, Compstronaut, and Select Every Other Layer — exposing their actions directly as searchable commands. Users of connected tools can immediately search and execute those plugins' actions without switching panels.
Availability
Command Frame version 1.5.1 is available now as a free download.
